Auckland cruise terminal designs all at sea

AUCKLAND – Designs for Auckland’s Queens Wharf have been rejected as not up to scratch, putting the multimillion dollar development in limbo, Stuff NZ reports

Auckland mayor John Banks said he and the judging panel decided to put all the submitted designs “to one side and have a cup of tea.”

The reason: “The submissions – simply not good enough.”

Queens Wharf is intended to be ‘party central’ for celebrations of the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

A competition was called for design of the wharf – needing a cruise ship terminal and a World Cup party area.

In total 237 individual concept designs were received and a further 25 plans from professional architectural teams.

From that officials anointed eight finalists – five individual and three team entries.

Banks said officials had selected a winner out of the eight finalists, but unanimously decided they weren’t up to scratch.

Instead it was time to “step back, get a clean sheet of paper, regroup probably late next week and see where we go from here,” said Banks.
