Aussies can show how it’s done

The Dominion Post says that Australian expertise in hosting sports events could “show the way” when four million Kiwis take on the 2011 Rugby World Cup party, Martin Snedden has told the tourism industry.

Mr Snedden is chief executive of Rugby New Zealand 2011, the organising committee that is a joint venture of the Government and the New Zealand Rugby Union.

Australians had grown in stature and economic fortune by hosting such events as the 2000 Olympic Games, the 2003 Rugby World Cup and the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games, Mr Snedden told a tourism conference yesterday.

“I have spent a lot of time … looking at other major events around the world.”

“What stands out to me is the success Australia has had with major events.”

“What Australia has managed to do is build their international profile, build international respect, build up their own capabilities in all sorts of areas.”

“I know this because I get an e-mail about every second week from an Australian telling me how good he is at major events and how I need to hire him.”

Mr Snedden said the 2011 tournament would cost $310 million to run.

Ticket sales, the only source of revenue, were forecast to bring in $280 million. Though the event would not make a profit, it would prove a boon for New Zealand in exposure as a tourist destination, he said.

In the industry’s annual tourism awards presented last night, Wellington’s Karori Sanctuary won the Conservation Department’s Conservation In Action Award, and the Air New Zealand Supreme Tourism Award went to Magic Travellers Network.
