Aussies warned to stay away from Indonesia

The Department of Foreign Affairs has reissued its travel advisory for Indonesia, saying terrorists were planning attacks that could take place at any time.

The advisory says Australians should reconsider their need to travel to Indonesia, adding, “There have been recent arrests of high-level terrorist operatives in Indonesia, but we assess terrorists are continuing active planning of attacks.”

“These attacks could take place at any time and could be imminent. Particular care should be taken at this time to avoid known terrorist targets.”

These included Bali and the Indonesian capital, Jakarta. Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said the warning follows the arrests last month of two Jemaah Islamiah kingpins in Indonesia.

“We haven’t upped the level of warning to Australians, that remains as it was,” he said.

“But the reason we’ve reissued the travel advisory is that, in the context of a number of high-profile arrests in recent times in Indonesia, we remain very concerned about the possibility of terrorist attacks and those terrorist attacks could be imminent.”

Mr Downer said there was a “sense in the community” that the threat from Indonesia had gone away, but this was not the case.
