Australia extends international travel ban until December

Tuesday, 02 Sep, 2021 0

Australia’s Department of Health extended its travel ban for a further three months, putting Qantas’ hopes of restarting international services in doubt.

The flag carrier had hoped to restart international services before Christmas but the federal government’s ‘human biosecurity emergency period’ is now extended until at least 17 December.

It was extended again following advice from the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee.

The emergency period not only bans most foreign inbound travel but also stops Australians leaving the country unless they apply for a special exemption on a limited number of reasons.

By December 2021 Australia may reach a vaccination rate of 80% which would be the trigger to start easing restrictions on international travel.
