Australia gets first online travel insurer for seniors
Australia’s first dedicated online travel insurer targeting travelers over 50 has been launched.
Boomers Travel Insurance hopes to plug a gap for older tourists who often find it difficult securing adequate travel cover simply because of their age.
Underwritten by insurance giant Allianz, there is no upper age limit for general policies.
It offers a simple online platform with 30 common types of pre-existing medical conditions automatically covered.
Boomers Travel Insurance managing director Ian Jackson says senior travel is an underserved but significant market segment.
"Australian boomers are much more active and adventurous than past generations, and in many cases there’s no reason why they can’t travel freely and still be fully insurable," he said.
Jackson said over 50’s accounted for around one-third of the Australian population, and make about 7 million domestic and overseas trips.
"The number of people in this demographic is growing rapidly and travelling more, yet a lot of insurers are actively discouraging them or even rejecting them outright. We’ll open the door for a lot of under-valued travellers."
Domestic and comprehensive policies are available to travellers of all ages and supported by the Allianz worldwide assistance network with a full-service help centre in Australia.
Other policies offer specialist cover for cruises, golf holidays, skiing and adventure activities.
