Australia tourist arrivals plunge by 99 percent

Foreign arrivals to Australia plunged to barely a trickle in April.

Compared with April 2019, last month’s arrivals were down by a colossal 99%, according to Australian Bureau of Statistics data.

There were less than 7,000 foreign arrivals into the country during the month.

The Government began restricting travel in and out of the country in February and is unlikely to open borders for Aussies to travel overseas apart from any designated ‘travel bubble’ until late-2020 or even 2021.

However domestic trips may get a phased restart by July.

"Domestic and international air travel is down by more than 97%, with nearly 40,000 passengers moving through Brisbane Airport on Easter Sunday last year, compared to just 31 passengers this year," said Treasurer Josh Frydenberg.

The Australian and New Zealand governments are planning to kickstart overseas tourism via a Trans-Tasman travel bubble which may be expanded to other countries in the region like Fiji.
