Australian visitors to Indonesia to top 1 million in 2014
Indonesia is set to become the no1 overseas destination for Australians, overtaking New Zealand, as it looks forward to welcoming its one millionth Aussie.
The milestone comes just days after Indonesian immigration officials announce that Australians will have visa-free access from early next year, which is likely to increase its popularity even further.
Indonesian immigration figures point to the one millionth Australian arriving in early December, and 2014 will be a record for a calendar year.
Last year more than 900,000 Australian visitors came to Indonesia with the vast majority – 826,000 – staying on the island of Bali.
Despite political differences between the two governments and the falling Australian dollar adding to holiday costs, the Australian love affair with Bali remains strong.
A Hotels.com index compiled for the first six months of the year put Bali as the most popular worldwide destination for the first time ever in terms of booking volume.
