Australians going with the flow in Europe

SYDNEY – With the popularity of cruising at an all-time high, a new segment of “cruising within cruising” has been growing among Australian travellers.

Managing director of Harvey World Travel, the aptly named David Rivers, says the growth in river cruising among Australian travellers over the past few years has given rise to new ships entering the market.

“Australians seem to have just discovered what Americans and Europeans have long known – that river cruising is one of the most stimulating and interesting holidays available anywhere,” said Rivers.

“This is a rapidly growing sector within the travel industry where the supply and quality of ships have dramatically increased and improved.

“So, while availability was previously quite limited, river cruising enthusiasts are now presented with more options and higher availabilities for 2009 and beyond.”

Rivers added, “The appeal of a river cruising experience is in the ever-changing scenery whereas with ocean cruises, the experience, by necessity, needs to be largely based around activities on board.”

“And due to new ships in the market, there is still scattered availability for sailings this year, with last-minute clearance deals on offer.

“This is in contrast to earlier years when travellers had to book a year in advance and be on wait-lists for preferred departure dates.”

Harvey World Travel offers a host of specialist river cruise options, all of them regarded as high quality operators such as Avalon Waterways, Scenic Spaceship, APT and Uniworld.

A product unique to Harvey World Travel is a hosted rail and river cruise through Spain and Portugal, where only 20 guests at a time are taken on one of the world’s most exclusive tours.
