Australians travelling overseas up by 8% in June

A report by Australia and New Zealand overseas travel trends specialist www.amsal.com shows that overseas travel by Australian residents increased by nearly 34,100 trips or 8% in the month of June 2006, and holiday travel rising by 9% with departures for VFR and business reasons up 7% and 4% respectively in the same period.

In total for the year ended June 2006, Australian overseas travel was recorded at 4.83 million, which was up by more than 242,100 departures or 5% on the June year 2005 result, with holiday travel increasing by 6% in the twelve month period and departures for VFR reasons up 4% and business travel up 5%.

By the top ten countries of intended stay, Australian travel to New Zealand fell by a further 2% in the month of June, with departures to the United States down 1% and to the United Kingdom up 12%.

Travel to Indonesia also fell by a massive further 44% in the month under review, with departures to Thailand up a massive 49% and to China and Fiji up 8% and 7% respectively.  Australian departures to Singapore rose by 4%, with travel to Hong Kong down 0.3% and to Malaysia up 6%.

Australian holiday travel to New Zealand, as area of intended stay, declined by 13% in the month of June 2006, with departures to Europe up 45% and to North America up 4%.

Travel to Asia for “holiday” reasons declined by 10% in the month under review, with departures to Fiji up 9% and to the “other” South Pacific Islands up 17%.

Holiday travel to the other Americas fell by 8% in June, with departures to Africa and the Middle East up 9%. Total overseas departures for holiday reasons were recorded at 2.27 million in the year ended June 2006 – up 6% on the year ended June 2005.
