Avianca Brasil cancels more than 1000 flights as lessors repossess more planes

Saturday, 26 Apr, 2019 0

Cash-strapped Avianca Brasil canceled more than 1,000 flights this week after being forced to return 18 more aircraft to lessors.

Avianca refused to disclose exactly how many remaining aircraft it has, but is thought to be just seven planes.

Just last month it was operating 35 planes.

At the beginning of April the airline scrapped several long haul routes from Sao Paulo including Mimi and New York.

It filed for bankruptcy protection last December due to mounting debts including airport and lessor fees.

Affected customers can submit requests for refunds or rebook through partner airlines.

The cancelations for services through April 28 affect routes around the country with flights from Brasilia, Rio and Sao Paulo hit hardest.

The airline’s assets including valuable airport slots will be reportedly sold at auction early next month.

Rival carriers Azul, LATAM and GOL are all vying for the slots.
