Avianca, low-cost carrier Viva to merge
Columbia-based Avianca will merge with low-cost Columbian carrier Viva.
“Viva will form part of Avianca Group International Ltd, ”the airlines said.
They will keep their separate brand identities and strategies.
Viva founder Declan Ryan will join the board of the new merged group.
Viva has bases in Colombia and Peru, offering no-frills flights with a fleet of 22 planes.
The merger is subject to regulatory approvals in both countries.
Avianca recently exited from Chapter 11 bankruptcy after a long restructuring process.
“Avianca will assume operational and financial control of Viva and its Colombian and Peruvian subsidiaries once the relevant authorities issue the corresponding approvals,” statement said.
“This new airline group will benefit customers with a more efficient cost structure offering lower prices, and a route network that would promote direct connectivity between destinations.”
