Aviation industry applauds roll out of SAF mandate
UK aviation’s green future has taken flight.
The sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) mandate has come into force.
The landmark rule mandates at least 2% of all jet fuel powering flights departing from the UK is sustainable.
“From this moment on, aviation will be a greener, more sustainable form of travel, and today marks a significant milestone,” UK Minister for Aviation Mike Kane said.
“With thousands of jobs supporting the UK sustainable aviation fuel industry, the mandate will help deliver our Plan for Change, and the freedom to travel in a more sustainable way.”
The mandate requires more ambitious targets be met going forward.
The SAF’s share of jet fuel capacity increases to 10% by 2030 and 22% by 2040.
It has been broadly welcomed across the industry.
Tim Alderslade, CEO of Airlines UK, added: “UK airlines support the SAF Mandate as both a powerful and practical tool for driving down aviation carbon emissions.”
“Our priority is ensuring airlines have access to the increasing volumes of SAF required.”
Karen Dee, CEO of AirportsUK, added: “Aviation knows it must reduce carbon emissions. The mandate is something long called for to help establish production of cleaner fuels.”
