Award-winning Cambodia ecotourism strives to deliver first hand nature
Chambok Community-based Ecotourism A Success Story: writes Khmer Times
The community-based Ecotourism complex of Chambok consists of nine rural villages located about a two-hour drive from Phnom Penh city and around 16 kilometers from Kirirom National Park.
The venture is fast becoming an appealing destination for adventurist tourists seeking to experience nature first-hand.
Tourists can take ox-cart rides, rent bikes or climb the mountain to visit waterfalls and other places in the middle of the forest. Ideally visitors should plan a two or three-day stay, as the community provides opportunities for home-stays and tourists can enjoy activities including watching art performances, learning various local crafts and making bamboo sticky rice.
Local guides can show visitors stunning views of forests and rice fields. Guests can enjoy bird-watching walks, swim in some of the six local waterfalls and even visit a bat-cave. Camping can also be arranged.
Established in 2003, the Chambok community aims to preserve the forests and local wildlife. Therefore, ecotourism was the obvious choice to increase the living standards of local people while dissuading them from cutting down trees for an income.
"Some of our tourists said that Chambok is the real eco-tourist site because we have preserved its environment. The route to each place does not allow any motorbikes or cars," said Chambok Community leader Touch Morn.
Keo Chanmalis, an eighteen-year-old visitor and student from the Royal University of Phnom Penh said, "I really love Chambok waterfall. It is magnificent, fresh and cold. It is very relaxing after I have spent a few hours climbing the mountain to reach the place."
Acknowledging the high level of service and its good reviews as an eco-tourism destination, Chambok Community-based Ecotourism has recently received two awards, including one from the Royal Government of Cambodia.
The community will also be honored with an ASEAN Homestay Award to be presented in Singapore later this month.
