BA says it’s in discussions with unions over jobs
The boss of British Airways has told staff there will be job losses as a result of coronavirus.
In a video memo to staff, called ‘The survival of British Airways’, chief executive Alex Cruz said aircraft would be grounded in a way the airline has never had to do before and jobs will be lost, either in the short or long term.
He said BA is already in discussions with trade unions and said the situation was worse for the airline than 9/11.
The memo said: "To be frank, given the changing circumstances, we can no longer sustain our current level of employment and jobs will be lost – perhaps for a short period, perhaps longer term.
"We are suspending routes and will be parking aircraft in a way that we have never had to before."
Cruz pleaded with staff not to ‘underestimate the seriousness of this for our company’ and said: "It is a crisis of global proportions like no other we have known."
He added BA will ‘continue to do our best for customers and offer them as much flexibility as we can’.
