BA suspends flights over Iraq
British Airways has temporarily suspended flights over Iraq as the US began air strikes against Islamic militants in the North.
The airline said services that use the route, mainly to Doha and Dubai, would not be cancelled or disrupted because alternative routes would be found.
It said it would ‘keep the situation under review’.
The move follows the Federal Aviation Administration banning US airlines from flying over Iraq because of safety concerns about military conflict.
The FAA said the decision would be reviewed at the end of the year.
A previous warning had urged pilots to fly at least 30,000 feet above Iraq because of the conflict between Iraqi security forces and militants.
The Lufthansa group of airlines have also suspended flights to Irbil in northern Iraq until Tuesday.
Conflict zones have become a growing concern to aircraft during the last year especially in the wake the Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 being shot down in eastern Ukraine.
