BA to take over some Qantas flights to London

Saturday, 16 Aug, 2011 0

Qantas will drop its Bangkok-London and Hong Kong-London flights, handing them over to British Airways, and will not use all of its London Heathrow slots, as part of its new international business strategy.

The move appears to reduce the opportunity for Australians to fly all the way to London on Qantas aircraft.

Qantas will place more of its A380s on
daily services to Los Angeles from Sydney and Melbourne, and the daily service to London via Singapore from Sydney and Melbourne.

Qantas also says it will look at new opportunities to work with oneworld member elect, Malaysia Airlines “particularly given its services to continental Europe, including Istanbul, Rome and Amsterdam”.

From April next year Santiago will replace Buenos Aires on the Qantas network, starting with three non-stop services per week.

The move will allow Qantas to work more closely with oneworld partner, LAN Airlines.

Qantas has negotiated with Airbus to defer delivery of six of its 20 A380s by five to six years to line up with the retirement of the last B744ER aircraft in its fleet.

The airline said the deferment would significantly reduce the capital invested in the Qantas International business.

Qantas has placed an order with Airbus for up to 110 new aircraft from the A320 family.
