BA traffic figures “exceed expectations”
British Airways revealed on Friday that December’s traffic statistics had been better than originally expected.
The airline said that while market conditions continued to be “difficult” there was a “measurable improvement” on November with promotions, particularly in economy, helping to boost passenger numbers and revenue.
While BA had cut capacity for the month by 12.5%, the actual decline was 10.4% meaning the passenger load factor was up 1.5 points on December 2000. However premium traffic again showed a big decline – down by 18.3% on the previous year, while economy traffic fell by 9.2%.
BA said: “While yield is expected to be weak due both to discounting and mix effects, overall revenue, while clearly well below last year’s level, is exceeding initial expectations.”
The BA figures followed positive December statistics from KLM and low cost carrier Go earlier on Friday. On Thursday American Airlines reported a 17% fall in traffic, compared to a 25% decline the previous month.
