BA’s Burr gets top board gig
British Airways’ Regional General Manager, Roger Burr, has been appointed to the Southern Cross University’s Industry Advisory Board, a body formed to advise the University’s Tourism and Hospitality Management School on current industry issues and developments.
The board now comprises 13 travel and tourism industry leaders, including John King, chairman of ATEC, Geoff Beames, a former executive director of Trans Australia Airlines(TAA) and Janette Davie, general manager of Pinpoint Travel Group. The board’s responsibilities range from reviewing course content and counselling the school on industry developments, to assisting with placement schemes and student exchange programs with European and American universities.
Southern Cross University’s Tourism and Hospitality Management School is widely-regarded as one of the world’s leading schools in its respective fields.
“The tourism industry has evolved considerably over the last decade and is continuing to do so, and it’s important that young people who are thinking about entering the industry workplace are fully aware of all the issues as and when they happen.”
“I’m extremely honoured to have been asked to join the Industry Advisory Board and am looking forward to helping make a real difference to the industry’s future leadersâ€, said Mr Burr.
“As the head of one of the world’s leading global airlines in Australia, I’m confident Roger’s breadth and depth of knowledge gleaned from many years experience will be a very valuable asset to the board. We work hard to bring academia closer to the day-to-day developments of the industry, and help foster a greater understanding of the threats and opportunities now facing travel, tourism and hospitality management,†added Mr King.
Professor John Jenkins, head of the School of Tourism and Hospitality Management, commented: “It is wonderful to see Roger, as an extremely experienced airline executive, contributing significantly to the University, particularly on current, topical and important issues. Our faculty and students have access to a wide range of experienced tourism personalities and advice so the transition from academic studies to industry employment is made more interesting and productive.â€
The Tourism and Hospitality Management School at Southern Cross University offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses and is internationally recognised for the excellence of its tourism and hospitality education and research.
The school currently has campuses in Lismore, Coffs Harbour and the Tweed Gold Coast, and operates The Hotel School at the Intercontinental Hotel in Sydney, whilst construction is underway for a new Gold Coast Campus on land leased from the Gold Coast Airport which will include both tourism and hotel schools.
