Baha Mar contractor begins work on new Bahamas resort

The ongoing troubles over the long delayed Baha Mar resort development hasn’t held up plans for China’s state-owned contractor China Construction America’s next Bahamas project.

The company has broken ground on a new $250 million dollar development in Nassau called The Pointe, which will feature a 200-room hotel, residential units, shopping and dining outlets, and a 1,000-car garage.

This new project will likely cause fewer sleepless nights for the company, as it will be the sole investor, developer and contractor, said Pointe president Daniel Liu.

"The Pointe represents another substantial milestone for us, different from our other project in the Bahamas," Lui said.

Parent company China State Construction Engineering Corporation acquired the British Colonial Hilton hotel and adjoining vacant lot last year.

"I would like to thank the developer, China State Construction and Engineering Corporation for the investment of $250 million in this harbor-front project, the 250 construction jobs being undertaken by Bahamians and the future employment prospects for 500 Bahamians," said Bahamas Prime Minister Perry Christie.

China State Construction expects the completion date to be sometime in 2017.

In recent days the Baha Mar saga has taken another twist with developer Sarkis Izmirlian claiming China State Construction has been colluding with the Bahamas government to oust him as principle developer of the $3.5 billion mega resort project.
