Baird does not believe Morrison will stand against him
Federal Liberal MP Bruce Baird said today that he did not believe speculation that former New South Wales State Liberal director Scott Morrison and former Managing Director of Tourism Australia, was going to contest Mr Baird’s seat of Cook.
Mr Baird said, “He’s a friend of mine and certainly made it clear he would never challenge me, and if I decide to stay on he’ll support me.”
Mr Baird is confident of retaining preselection for his Sydney seat despite reports of branch-stacking against him, with more than 300 people joining the Liberal Party in Mr Baird’s southern Sydney seat in the past week in a “membership drive”.
Media reports question whether Mr Baird is the victim of an ambush by the party’s right faction with the cut-off to vote in next year’s pre-selections this Friday while Mr Baird is in New York as a delegate to the United Nations.
Mr Baird told ABC radio that he was not losing any sleep over the reports and did not believe he was the victim of a plot to oust him by factional enemies from the party’s right, adding, “I don’t think so and I’m certainly aware there’s a certain amount of, as it it’s called, branch development going on”. “In my seat the factional activities are always there.”
