Bali demolition squad moves on Anantara’s Fawlty Towers
DENPASAR –The Bali Update newswire (www.balidiscovery.com) this week carries an account of the demolition of the sixth floor of the Anantara Resort on Seminyak Beach.
Citing a report in the Bali Post, it refers to claims that the enforcement team from the local Badung government has been “hoodwinked†by the owners of the Anantara Resort.
The sixth floor Sunset at Six bar has, according to the Bali Post, been built in violation of local building rules that stipulate no building may be higher than a coconut tree.
Locals have claimed the Anantara’s SOS bar is three metres more than the permitted maximum height of 15 metres for buildings in Bali.
Bali Update quotes local sources that “the hotel’s management signed a guarantee on September 8, 2008, to demolish the sixth floor barâ€.
A team of 20 enforcement officers from the Badung Police swept into the resort last Wednesday and demolished the entire sixth floor, according to the Bali Update report.
Again, quoting local sources, Bali Update said, “the management of the Anantara Resort spent a few days going through the motions of pretending to demolish the structures on the sixth floor only to allow the violating structures to remain intact.
“When challenged on this point, the resort’s management claimed that demolishment was halted due to safety concerns for the guests occupying the Anantara Resort.â€
