Bali plans Mangrove M-Way
Five Indonesian state companies are planning to build an elevated roadway linking the five-star tourist enclave of Nusa Dua to the Bali capital of Denpasar and its airport.
A report in the Jakarta Globe said the 14.5km road will be partly constructed over the sea and coastal mangrove forests.
The Bali Tourism and Development Corporation (BTDC) and the operators of Denpasar’s Ngurah Rai airport are among a consortium behind the US$222 million project,
BTDC director Mande Mandra said “only about 100 square metres of (mangrove) forests would need to be cleared,†to accommodate the road, which is seen as an answer to heavy congestion on the single main road between Nusa Dua and Denpasar.
It is hoped that the new road will be completed ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum, which will be held in Bali in 2013.

coinciding with the planned expansion of the Ngurah Rai airport the same year.
Tender details for the road will be released in January.
