Bangkok braced for fresh demonstrations
BANGKOK: Thailand’s capital is bracing itself for another huge demonstration tomorrow as red-shirted supporters of disgraced former premier Thaksin Shinawatra gather in the city.
Up to 300,000 Thaksin supporters are predicted to join a protest against the government.
The ex premier, now on the run overseas, is using “phone-ins” to urge his red-shirted supporters to turn up in full force and push for political reform.
The protestors plan to occupy areas around Government House, the Royal Plaza, and the personal residence of current prime minister.
The Australian government is advising visitors to Thailand to show a “high degree of caution.
It notes on its Smart Traveler website,
“Suvarnabhumi International and Don Muang airports in Bangkok were closed from late November until early December 2008 due to demonstrations.
“Further disruption of transport and other infrastructure could occur. Demonstrations can develop quickly and with little warning.â€
