Bangkok tense, bookings boom
Bangkok survived its first day of anti-government protests on Monday with little disruption to transportation although protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban has vowed to keep the city in lockdown until Thailand’s caretaker government falls.
“We will shut down the city. We will do it everyday until we win,” Suthep told protesters.
And in a new threat, demonstrators have indicated they will target the offices of the Department of Civil Aviation in an attempt to hinder the work of air traffic controllers.
Security authorities are warning that if air traffic control is compromised, demonstrators will face stiff penalties.
Despite the protests in Bangkok, UK tour operators are reporting that bookings to Thailand are booming.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) said bookings for the first week of January are up between 20-40%.
