Bank holiday strikes will hit Heathrow Express
Rail union RMT has confirmed a further wave of strike action across Heathrow Express this bank holiday weekend.
The action is in response to multi-million pound cuts which, it says "amount to an all-out assault on pay, jobs and safety and a continued failure by the company to address a series of safety-critical issues raised by the union".
Following a 48-hour strike last month, RMT has now instructed Heathrow Express members not to book on for any shifts between 03.00 hours on Friday until 02.59 hours on Saturday and from 03.00 hours on Monday until 02.59 hours on Tuesday.
Furthermore, all Heathrow Express members have been instructed to not to work any rest days or overtime from 03.00 hours on Saturday until 02.59 hours on Monday.
The action over the spring bank-holiday period will lead to major disruption to services on one of Heathrow’s busiest weekends.
Meanwhile, travellers face further bank holiday disruption as London underground technicians prepare to strike over pay, forcing a Tube closure.
The 40 technicians, mostly members of Unite, are based at the power control room in Blackfriars Road, where they provide the power for the 270 station underground network.
Unless the dispute can be resolved, the underground will begin to close on Friday evening due to health and safety concerns over passengers being stranded on tube trains without power.
Conciliation talks are still being held to resolve the dispute before the strike, which is due to start at 00.01 on Saturday and end at 08.00 on Tuesday.
Unite is also asking for more money for its members who train new recruits, but claims the management wants staff to take on the additional responsibility for no extra cash.
Unite regional officer Hugh Roberts said: "The management has had a long-time to resolve this dispute and we urge them to do so very quickly, so Londoners and domestic and foreign visitors can enjoy the many delights of the capital over the late spring bank holiday."
