Bansko no longer Europe’s cheapest ski resort

Friday, 12 Dec, 2016 0

Slovenia’s Kranjska Gora is now the cheapest of 16 ski resorts across Europe, overtaking Bansko which has been the cheapest for 10 years.

The Slovenian resort was one of six surveyed where prices in the local currencies have dropped to reduce the impact of sterling’s fall in value.

According to research by Crystal Ski, in partnership with the Post Office, Kranjska Gora was the cheapest resort surveyed with a cost of £1,071 for six days’ ski and boot hire, lift passes and ski school, together with a sample price for lunch on the slopes and a range of drinks for two adults and two children.

The low cost of family ski tuition was a key factor – £340 compared with £530 in Bansko.

Although Bankso is still cheapest for ski/boot hire and lift passes, the total cost was £1,151 – 7.5% more than Kranjska Gora.

The weaker pound has pushed up prices by more than 25% in half of the 16 resorts surveyed.

French and Swiss resorts surveyed struggled to compete on price with Italian and Austrian ones, excluding Kitzbuhel.

None of the three French resorts surveyed – Morzine, Serre Chevalier and Les Deux Alpes – made it into the top half of this year’s Family Ski Resort Report league table.

The Post Office said when the weaker exchange rate is added to local price rises of between 10%-14% in French resorts, UK skiers can expect to pay 33%-39% more than a year ago.

However, it pointed out that the survey was carried out in the beginning of October when the pound was weaker than it is now.

Switzerland remains most expensive in the survey although the price rises in the two resorts surveyed were lower than in France. This is because local charges are on par with last year in Saas Fee (£2,279) and slightly lower in Wengen (£2,398).
