Banzai! Japan wins the 2020 Olympics
Shouts of “Banzai!!” were heard across Tokyo on Saturday when the city was chosen to host the 2020 Olympics, the Korea Herald reported, and Japan’s travel industry surely agreed.
Tokyo’s winning bid to host the 2020 Olympics, to be held July 24 to August 9, should bring a welcome tourism boost to Japan.
The Japanese capital beat other runners Madrid and Istanbul to be elected the host city.
Winning the games will bolster stocks, tourism and consumer confidence hopes Prime Minister Shinzo Abe who has plans to revive the world’s third-biggest economy.
He said to Bloomberg: "We’ve got a great chance to make Tokyo and Japan shine.
"I want to overcome 15 years of deflation. Hosting the Olympics and Paralympics will have good effects on a wide range of areas such as infrastructure and tourism."
James Mundy of InsideJapan Tours, believes it’s great news for Japan and the Olympics.
He said: "Tokyo is a unique city where traditional meets ultra modern offering something completely new to the visiting westerner.
"It is a safe city with an almost non existent crime rate, a fantastic public transport network with friendly inhabitants keen to help strangers.
"The event may also expel rumors that Japan is a horrendously expensive country with day to day costs being generally cheaper than the UK.
"We ran tours to the 2002 World Cup which was held in Korea and Japan and sits fond in the memories of football fans for being such a fun, friendly and completely different tournament and showed the world what Japan could do."
