Barcelona tops online accommodation bookings league
Online accommodation bookings have soared by more than 200% in the last year, according to a survey.
The poll by Cendant-owned Australian online accommodation provider HotelClub.com, internet accommodation bookings by UK consumers have surged by 226% over summer 2003.
Eight out of the top 10 destinations booked were overseas, with Barcelona the most popular choice, followed by Paris.
HotelClub.com’s top 10 destinations booked by UK customers reads: Barcelona, Paris, London, Sydney, Prague, Amsterdam, Rome, Edinburgh, Venice and Singapore.
The top 10 domestic destinations are: London, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Manchester and Birmingham.
The findings are based on accommodation bookings to HotelClub.com in the July-September quarter. The company claims 3.5 million unique visitors per month worldwide and has access to more than 10,000 hotels in 47 countries.
HotelClub.com is part of e-commerce travel company Flairview Travel, itself a wholly-owned subsidiary of Cendant Travel Services Distribution.
*Ryanair is to launch flights to Barcelona from Blackpool next summer. The daily service starts on March 31, with 100,000 passengers a year predicted to use the route. Ryanair already serves Dublin and Stansted from Blackpool airport.
