But carrier sticks with its decision to make goodwill gesture

Newspapers, travel agents and holidaymakers have roundly condemned British Airways’ decision to give £80 worth of flight vouchers to those caught up in last month’s chaos.

As reported, close on 100,000 passengers experienced delays at Heathrow Airport and elsewhere after check-in staff staged a wildcat strike. If everyone affected by the strike were to use the vouchers, the carrier would be hit to the tune of £8 million, but according to the Daily Mail, only 20,000 are likely to use the vouchers.

James Fremantle, of the Air Transport Users’ Council, reportedly told the newspaper that while BA deserved some praise for issuing the vouchers, he criticised the decision to make a fixed pay-out. He said: “If the delay was two or three hours you would be delighted with £80 but if you were waiting three days you would be very disappointed. We think a sliding scale would be much fairer.”

One traveller reportedly told the Mail: “I am spitting mad – the £80 offer is insulting. A voucher would be useless – you can only use it with BA and the chances are I will never fly with BA again.”

A spokesman for BA said: “This is a goodwill gesture – we have made some apologies and we just want to put some money behind that.”
