Beach and theme park visitors spend more

Sunday, 31 Aug, 2004 0

US tourists who visit beaches and or theme/amusement parks are a lucrative market, reports the Travel Industry Association of America (TIA).

These travelers tend to take longer vacations and spend more money per trip than overall travelers, according to data from TIA’s TravelScope survey.

Nearly 110 million trips were made by US households to the beach last year. They spent an average of $752 per trip, including transportation to their destination, compared to $398 for the average traveler.

The average beach trip lasts 6.3 nights, the survey found, compared to 4.1 nights overall.

US visitors also included theme/amusement parks on nearly 79 million domestic trips last year. These households spent $810 on average, compared to other visitors who spent $398. Theme park visitors also included longer trips, 5.7 nights compared to the average of 4.1 nights.

Both beach travelers and theme/amusement park travelers are more likely than average to fly to their destination   —  20% compared to 16%.
