Beaches clean after pipeline leak, say Italian tourism officials
Officials in the Italian tourist area of Liguria say a pipeline link near the region’s capital, Genoa, has not affected its coastline.
In a statement on Thursday, they said tests following the leak on April 17 found no oil traces in its west and east Rivieras.
"The oil leaked into the Polcevera River did not reach the tourism destination of Liguria and remained isolated in the area around the industrial part of Genoa," the statement said.
"The sea of Liguria is clean for visitors and there are no bathing restrictions as a result of the oil spill. Liguria remains the Italian region with the most ‘Blue Flag’ awarded beaches – a recognition of clean seas, tidy beaches and quality services."
