Beijing gets its first chip shop
Anyone heading for the Chinese city of Beijing who thinks they may pine for some traditional English food will no doubt be delighted to learn that its first fish and chip shop has opened.
According to The Times, Fish Nation, which opened this week, is claimed to be the first fish and chip shop on the mainland, serving battered cod and hand-cut chips served with salt and vinegar and wrapped in newspaper – as well as deep-fried tempura and squid.
Owner Jeng Lie, who reportedly fell in love with fish and chips while on a trip to Britain, is quoted as saying: “It was more interesting than just setting up a bar. It has got great potential to be a success – it could be as big as the Chinese takeaway in Britain. Why not?”
Mr Leng reportedly added that he was very concerned about the authenticity of his food, adding: “Once I was watching television in Britain and saw a famous chef saying how to make Peking duck and getting it all wrong. I hope out takeaway won’t get it as wrong as he did.”
The Times reports that Fish Nation is situated in the Saltinun bar district of Beijing.
