The country of Belize has never been known for exotic dishes but lover-of-strange-foods Andrew Zimmern found much to chew on during a recent episode of the Travel Channel’s new show “Bizarre Worlds.”
Among his favorite dishes: raw horse conch and conch penis (dining fodder at the Cave of the Crystal Maiden, one of many underworld caves in Belize); conch eyes ceviche and rhino beetle-butter poached lobster (haute Maya cuisine).
And how about something you may not have considered: Roasted Gibnut, which is a “royal rat” rubbed down in spices and vinegar before being browned and simmered (found in the jungle?
Oh yes, did we forget Stinking Toe, described as a “horrible-smelling seed” found in a small village.
