Big surge in Expedia hotel bookings to Jamaica
Bookings for Jamaica vacations have surged in 2014 with travel site Expedia highlighting a huge increase in demand from some overseas markets.
Demand for Jamaica hotels on Expedia and Hotels.com rose overall by 20% in the first half of 2014, compared to the same period in 2013.
Underpinning the increase is a jump of almost 130% in demand from Brazil, and a 100% increase in bookings by customers from the Netherlands.
Not far behind is Sweden with 95% growth rate and 70% in Italy.
The company presented its data to hospitality leaders at this week’s JAPEX tourism conference taking place on the island.
"Jamaica consistently ranks as one of the Caribbean’s leading destinations and we’re thrilled that our Jamaican hotel partners continue to report growth and are generating demand," said Demetrius Canton, director of partner services for the Caribbean at Expedia.
"Attending JAPEX and meeting with industry leaders and valued partners provides our market management team with the opportunity to enhance our relationships in the region," he added.
JAPEX 2014, which concluded yesterday, has been hailed as one of the best ever by tourism minister, Dr. Wykeham McNeill.
"It really has been a tremendous success, and this is something that we will have to broaden to ensure that we not only bring visitors to the island, but seek to deepen the impact of tourism on the local economy," the minister said.
