Big theme park project slated for Riviera Maya
Plans for a Mayan inspired theme park on Mexico’s Caribbean coast have been confirmed, which will rival the best in Orlando, says Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto.
Called ‘Amikoo’ – Mayan for ‘amigo,’ it will cost about $840 million covering 300-acres on the Riviera Maya.
Construction will be over two phases with the first set to open in November 2018.
"We’re going to compete with others up there (in the US), and I’m sure ours will be better," Pena Nieto said at a media event alongside the project developers.
It will feature rides and cartoon characters based on Mayan mythology, a 320-room hotel and a Mayan archaeology museum.
Investors behind the project said they hope to attract about four million visitors a year.
