Blog: Our intrepid traveller goes underground in Vietnam
Sara Mason-Parker, business development manager at Corporate Traveller, continues her account of a 10-day Intrepid tour of Vietnam.
"Hue, a mini Hanoi but without so much hustle and bustle; as in it’s easier to cross the street!
Sat beside the Perfume River, Hue is rich in history with many old sights to visit. The Citadel is probably the main option you’d want to explore, complete with the Emperor’s Forbidden City where he lived with his 103 concubines.
We took a dragon-boat trip down the river to visit a Buddhist temple with its beautiful pagodas and stunning gardens. Then visited the Emperor’s mausoleum which is based in his old holiday home; again, stunning setting. Even though you can visit his tomb the story is that nobody actually knows where his body was laid to rest amongst the grounds as the men who buried him were killed immediately after carrying out the task.
If you have time, a day trip to Vinh Moch tunnels is a must. Located two hours from Hue, you can experience how villagers lived underground during the bombings during the Vietnam War.
The drive to and from there is worth the trip alone as you pass through amazing countryside, fishing villages and deserted beaches.
Hue is the Vegetarian region of Vietnam, you would be surprised by how many delicious dishes they serve in this area, I never knew vegetables could taste so good.
Back on the bus now and Hoi An bound for beaches and cheap tailoring!"
