Bmi to launch Caribbean flights

Bmi is doubling its longhaul destinations by launching weekly flights to the Caribbean this winter. The carrier will fly from Manchester to Antigua from 27 November, to Barbados from 26 November and to St Lucia via Barbados from 1 December. The flights cater to holidaymakers on a seven or 14 night break. There will be one return flight per week to St Lucia on Wednesdays, flights to Barbados direct on Fridays and to Antigua on Saturdays. Return fares will start at £449 including taxes. Bmi chief executive, Austin Reid said: “Passengers now have no need to travel to London and onto the Caribbean services of those carriers showing little appetite or commitment to the important UK regions. Manchester’s hub status is also set to increase as our new services have been timed specifically to provide travellers to and from Scotland – and Heathrow – with convenient connections.” The airline started flying longhaul in Spring 2001 with flights from Manchester to Washington and Chicago, but these services have had mixed success. In November 2002 bmi said it was suspending Washington flights for the Winter. However, in January bmi announced the launch of flights to Toronto from Manchester, which start in April. The airline offers three classes in longhaul – economy, premium economy, and business.
