Boffins back best beach formula
UK: Team says 28 factors go together to make the perfect beach
Scientists have devised a formula for working out what is the perfect beach – after three years exhaustive research into the subject.
A team of scientists from Wales, Turkey and Malta asked some 1,000 holidaymakers to list 28 factors that go together to make the best beach, including a lack of litter and sewage, colour of sea water, small tidal range, scenery, and cliffs. All categories were ranked on a scale of one to five.
The best three beaches in the scientists’ three home countries were Cirali beach, Turkey; Dingli Cliffs, Malta; and Little Haven, Wales.
The leader of the study, Allan Williams, told The Times: “The purpose of this study was to see if this sort of assessment works – and it does. The formula will tell you whether a beach is good, bad or ugly, and in which areas it is deficient.”
