Bold plans to help industry’s women

A dedicated website and government funding to help women progress in the UK travel industry are some of the ideas that will be discussed by a Tourism Society steering committee next week.

Following the success of last month’s event in London which discussed the creation of a mentoring scheme for women in the industry, the Tourism Society believes there is real scope to help women progress in their careers but that more resources are needed.

The Tourism Society already runs a pilot mentoring scheme for its members, but wants to expand this to other women in the industry. Destination marketing consultant and member of the Tourism Society Gaby Marcon said it might mean getting other industry organisations such as ABTA, BITOA and IATA involved rather than trying to do all the work under the auspices of the Tourism Society.

She told TravelMole: “It takes a lot of time and resources. Right now everything is done voluntarily but it takes time to find venues, speakers and get the material together to give the mentees and train the mentors. It may be that the Tourism Society cannot run it by itself.”

The current Tourism Society pilot scheme offers a combination of one to one mentoring along with women-oriented initiatives such as workshops and networking events. The first event is being scheduled for October 27 with Tourism Society member and World Trade Centre general manager Sunny Crouch. The event, which will take place at London’s Gloucester Hotel, will have the theme ‘Lessons learned on the way to the top’.
