Bomb threat forces plane to land at Stansted

Two RAF jets were scrambled this morning to escort an Air India plane into Stansted Airport after a bomb threat.

The plane, which was travelling from Mumbai to Newark with 327 passengers on board, landed at the London airport at 10.30. All passengers had to disembark and security checked. They were due to continue their journey on Thursday evening.

Air India said Flight 191, a Boeing 777, made a ‘precautionary landing’ due to a bomb threat but later deleted that tweet and called it a ‘security threat’.

London Stansted said its runway has now re-opened and is fully operational following the emergency landing.

It apologised for any disruption caused by the incident and thanked passengers for their patience.

The incident comes just days after jets were scrambled to escort a Jet2 flight back to Stansted due a disruptive passenger on board.

On both occasions, the jets caused loud sonic booms that prompted 999 calls from people fearing an explosion.
