Boobs on Bikes may not go ahead

Auckland’s mayor Dick Hubbard has called the Boobs on Bikes parade “morally repugnant” and hopes the organiser’s permit to tour down Queen Street will be revoked.

Mr Hubbard arrived back in New Zealand on Monday and was aghast to hear the promotion for this month’s Erotica Expo had been given the green light.

A meeting with councillors will be held today to see if there is any way of revoking the permit, granted by a council officer last week.

The officer could see nothing illegal in the council’s bylaws to outlaw topless woman parading down the city’s streets.

The promotion would see 30 topless porn stars travelling pillion on motorbikes at midday August 23 – two days before the Erotica Expo.

Erotica Expo organiser Steve Crow has held informal parades for the past three years, but this year sought a permit to help with traffic management.

Mr Crow told TV3 he would hold the parade with or without the blessing of the council.

A spokeswoman for the Mayor said Mr Hubbard thought the parade promoted porn and degraded women, and was inappropriate because it advertised a commercial event.

She said the proposed route for the tour would pass a kindergarten and school.

Councillors would meet today in an attempt to revoke the permit, which gave the parade continuous green lights down Queen Street.

“It’s the councillors that have got upset about it due to huge public reaction by people saying they didn’t want it,” she said.

The council has received emails from hundreds of people against the parade.

A decision by the council was expected late today.
