An investigation is under way after a young boy was crushed and died in a freak accident in a rotating restaurant above an Atlanta hotel.

Atlanta Fire Department spokesman Sgt. Cortez Stafford said the five-year old somehow got caught in the rotating wall of the Sun Dial restaurant which sits at the top of the Westin Peachtree Plaza hotel.

The child’s head was stuck between a wall and a table as the restaurant rotated and suffered major head injuries.

He died in hospital officials said.

The boy’s family was visiting from North Carolina.

"There was a tragic accident at the hotel involving a young boy. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. As soon as we learned of the accident, we immediately responded until emergency personnel arrived. We are working with the authorities as they look into this tragic accident," said a statement by hotel manager George Reed.

The Sun Dial is an iconic eatery that opened in 1976.

It slowly rotates offering dinners a panoramic view of the city and also houses an observation platform.

It is the second death in just over one year at the hotel.

In March 2016, a hotel worker was accidentally locked in a walk-in freezer overnight and was found dead the next morning.
