Brighton Pier engulfed in flames
UK: Firefighters helpless as famous attraction goes up in smoke
A massive fire has broken out on Brighton’s historic West Pier, reducing much of the Victorian landmark to ash.
According to press reports, smoke began pouring from the pavilion at the end of the pier shortly before 9.45 this morning; within an hour the whole end section of the structure was an inferno. The blaze is the second to affect Brighton’s piers in the space of a few weeks; last month the neighbouring Palace Pier was also hit by fire.
The West Pier, which was already in a state of semi-collapse, had been due to be refurbished; planning permission had been granted earlier this year and work was to start in early 2004. It has stood derelict since 1975, when it was closed to the public, and the pier has had two major collapses in recent months.
