Britain bottom of European paid leave table
Workers in every country in Europe beat Britain hands down for the amount of paid holiday they get each year.
According to the Daily Express, research by Mercer Human Resource Consulting showed people in Finland enjoy the most time off, with 25 days’ paid holiday and 14 public holidays.
Workers in Austria get a total of 38 days off, and in Greece the total is 37, with France, Portugal, Spain and Sweden all on 36.
In Britain, there are only eight public holidays a year, about half of what the Finns get, and 20 days’ paid holiday, the least amount in Europe. The Netherlands sits side by side with the UK at the bottom of the table, also with a total of 28 days. The average leave and public holiday entitlement across all European Union countries is 34 days.
Union officials claim having fewer holidays causes greater stress levels at work, which then leads to increased levels of absence due to illness.
