British Airways terminates Travel Agents contracts in Kenya
BA made good their threat on 1st of February 2009 and terminated contracts of IATA accredited Travel Agents in Kenya who refused to aid its violation of IATA’s PSAA (Resolution 824 Section 9).
The Kenya Association of Travel Agents (KATA) had earlier protested BA’s violation of IATA’s PSAA (Resolution 824 Section 9) that states that an Airline shall remunerate an agent for services rendered. In KATA’S opinion, BA’s actions constitute an unauthorized attempt to amend the Passenger Sales Agency Agreement in which the payment of remuneration is a key element. Only a formal act by the Passenger Agency Conference can amend Resolution 824 and KATA is not aware from Conference records of any such act having been executed.
KATA also considers that improper pressure has been on some Travel agents to become complicit with BA’s wrongful actions.
BA’s actions have sparked a protest amongst travel agents in Kenya and members of the KATA have initiated a boycott against the airline since Monday 19th January 2009.
