British couple saved from overturned tourist boat
A British couple have been saved from an overturned tourist boat in the Caribbean in which 13 of the passengers died.
The La Reina del Caribe overturned off Nicaragua after being hit by a giant wave in strong winds between Corn Island and Little Corn Island.
Edward and Charlotte Beckett, from London, survived along with 13 Costa Ricans, two Americans and a Brazilian.
The passengers who lost their lives have not yet been confirmed but were reported to be Costa Rican.
The boat’s skipper and owner Hilario Blandon, 53, and his assistant Eliot Absalon Prats Carter, 30, have been arrested.
They are being held in jail on Corn Island after allegedly sailing without authorisation in bad weather on the scuba diving trip, reports AFP news agency.
Boat launches had reportedly been suspended in the area due to high wind speeds that reached 25 to 30 knots after several days of stormy weather around the remote islands.
The Corn Islands are a popular tourist destination for snorkelling and scuba diving.
