British man killed after seal-watching boat capsizes
A British man was killed after a boat capsized on a seal-watching trip in Cape Town.
A member of the crew is also missing after the charter boat Miroshga got into difficulty near Duiker Island in South Africa.
Two women, believed to be British, were trapped inside the hull of the boat and used an air pocket to breathe. They were discovered by police divers and rescued after being given emergency dive training.
The National Sea Rescue Institute said there were 38 people onboard the Miroshga on Saturday and that there was one fatality. At least 24 of the survivors were hospitalised with serious or minor injuries, while 12 other people were assessed and treated for hypothermia before they were released.
It remains unclear what caused the boat to capsize.
A spokesman for the Foreign Office said: ‘We are aware of a boat capsizing in Hout Bay near Cape Town on Saturday afternoon.
‘Several British nationals were hospitalised following the incident, most of whom have now been released.
‘We are aware of reports of the death of a British national in this incident and we are urgently looking into these reports."
