British man rescued after six days trapped in Bali well
A British man is recovering from a six-day ordeal stuck in a well in Bali with a broken leg.
Jacob Matthew Roberts said he was trying to flee from a stray dog, which chased him, when he slipped and fell into the open well.
He would have almost certainly been discovered earlier but for Covid-19 restrictions.
The incident happened in Pecatu Village, not far from a number of high-end resorts and south Bali’s normally busy surfing breaks.
He had survived by only drinking water and looked ‘thin’, according to local search and rescue chief Gede Darmada.
His cries for help were eventually heard by a passing farmer who alerted authorities.
"We are supporting a British man in Bali and are in contact with the local hospital," the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office told CNN.
Darmada has asked locals to pay strict attention to their wells and use temporary covers, especially as the rainy season has come to an end.
Luckily the water level was only a few inches deep.
Roberts, who apparently holds an Ukrainian passport, has been holidaying in Bali since March.
