British travelers swap frost for sun: Top winter sun destinations revealed by Away Holidays
As summer comes to a close, a growing number of Brits are opting to escape the winter blues by booking holidays in warmer climates. Searches for ‘where can you go on holiday in December’ increased by 100% year-on-year.
According to new booking insights from Away Holidays, destinations like the Maldives, Morocco, Thailand and Dubai are topping the list of most-booked winter getaways for the 2025/26 season.
From tropical retreats to off-season European escapes, the average length of stay is currently 6 to 7 nights. Booking values varying by destination, but showing a clear preference for upgraded accommodation.
Gianni, Product Director at Away Holidays, says. “January is becoming the new July for a growing number of British travelers and we’re seeing a real shift in mindset. People are now prioritizing experiences that offer sunshine, rest and a break from the winter slump. After the busy Christmas period, many are choosing to reset with an affordable week in the sun rather than stay home in the cold.”
The most booked winter sun destinations for 2025/2026
1) Maldives
Gianni says, “Perfect for those seeking barefoot luxury, the Maldives offers warm, turquoise waters and pristine beaches. With average temperatures around 28°C and minimal rainfall between December and March, it’s an ideal escape from the cold.
“Over-water villas, world-class diving and snorkeling, and serene spa experiences make it a favorite for honeymooners and anyone looking for pure relaxation.”
2) Morocco
Gianni explains, “Morocco offers an enticing mix of culture, adventure, and sunshine in winter. In destinations like Marrakesh and Agadir, temperatures hover around 20°C, making it pleasant for exploring souks, desert landscapes, and coastal resorts.”
3) Thailand
Gianni says, “Thailand’s dry season runs from November to March, offering plenty of sunshine, calm seas, and temperatures around 27–30°C. From beaches of Phuket and Koh Samui to the vibrant city life of Bangkok, it’s a versatile destination for winter tourists. Add in its incredible food, welcoming culture, and affordable luxury.”

“The Caribbean ticks every box for a winter escape,” says Gianni. “ Holidays to the Caribbean offer guaranteed sunshine, turquoise seas, and a relaxed pace that helps people truly switch off. December and January are two of the best months to visit, with warm but comfortable weather and plenty of cultural festivities.
“Destinations like Barbados, Antigua, and St Lucia are firm favorites for their beaches and luxury resorts. While places like the Dominican Republic and Jamaica offer excellent value for money without compromising on atmosphere or adventure. For many Brits, it’s the perfect post-Christmas reset.
“Tenerife also remains one of the most popular winter sun destinations for Brits and it’s easy to see why,” says Gianni. “With average temperatures hovering around 22°C in December and January, it offers a welcome dose of warmth without the long-haul flight.”

Travel is peaking around Christmas, Valentine’s Day, and the post-bank holiday period, as people look to break up long stretches of winter with sun-soaked escapes.

Travelers aged 35–55 make up the majority of winter sun bookings. Trends also point to a surge in Gen Z travelers choosing to upgrade their stays, opting for partner or solo trips over traditional group holidays.
Emerging experiences:
Alongside sun holidays, winter cruises and aurora-chasing trips are gaining momentum, reflecting a wider appetite for bucket-list experiences.
Flexible finance
More customers are taking advantage of payment plan options, showing that while cost remains a factor, holidaymakers are prioritizing flexibility and quality.
“Winter travel is no longer just about escaping the cold,” adds Gianni. “It becomes a time for meaningful travel, whether that’s a romantic break, a solo wellness trip, or ticking a dream destination off the list.”
