Briton missing for a week on volcano

Concern is growing for a British traveller who has gone missing while trying to climb a volcano in the central American country of Nicaragua.

According to the Daily Telegraph, Nicholas Roth, 28, a lawyer, set off last Wednesday with an American accomplice to climb the Maderas volcano, on the country’s Ometepe island.

But, when he failed to return, a local innkeeper raised the alarm and 80 rescue workers are now searching for the pair.

However, the search has been delayed by heavy rain and thick fog, the newspaper reports.

Mr Roth’s brother Nigel is quoted as saying: “We have been told it is a very safe country. There are three hostels for backpackers in that particular area and lots of people do this trek. We have been told the most likely scenario is that they have got lost in the bad weather and become disoriented.”

A Foreign and Commonweath Office spokesman is quoted as saying that consular assistance was being provided.
